Grit, growth, and the firehose: lessons from my first year in consulting

21.05.2025 | By Liam Zaccheo, Miebach

I joined Miebach just under a year ago, fresh out of Indiana University with a degree in Supply Chain Management and Economic Consulting. With a diploma that looked great on paper and internships I believed would pave the way for a smooth transition into the workforce – I still wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. What I’ve learned since is that the real preparation doesn’t come from coursework alone, but from the people around you and the culture of the organization you're in.

My biggest surprise? Every day is a final project. School gave me the technical foundation – what goes into delivering results, how to build models, how to structure a report – but it didn’t prepare me for shifting client priorities, juggling a demanding travel schedule, or navigating working across different companies and personalities. Consulting is fast-paced and highly competitive, but it also comes with something powerful: a network of colleagues who support one another, building trust and friendships that go far beyond the office.

At Miebach, two core values, Grit and Innovation, have shaped how I’ve approached my career. As a former collegiate athlete, I thought I had grit down. But joining Miebach gave that word new meaning. It’s no longer about out sweating or outworking someone on the practice field. Here, grit means being the hardest worker in the room and using that effort the pillar for innovative thinking and thought leadership. I’ve been lucky to work with a team that lives out this mindset every day.

The moment everything clicked for me was on a flight home from a project closeout. I was seated next to an older gentleman and ended up explaining what I do for work. As I spoke, I could hear the excitement in my own voice. Concepts I once struggled to grasp flowed naturally. That conversation made me realize how far I’d come – from learning to leading, from asking questions to offering insights.

Miebach gave me an opportunity that few companies offer early in your career. Around here, we call it drinking from the firehose. From day one, you're thrown into real projects, challenged to deliver at a high standard, and encouraged to fail fast and grow even faster. Without that trial-by-fire approach, I don’t think I’d have the confidence I do now to speak clearly about the complex and ever-changing nature of our work.

Year one has been filled with late nights, caffeine-fueled brainstorming, and plenty of learning moments. But more than that, it’s been a year of growth. I’m proud to be part of a company that delivers value in an evolving supply chain – and even more proud to contribute to a culture that pushes you to do your best work every day.
