When introducing or looking to advance the digital capability, capacity, or maturity of the supply chain, it’s critical to examine it from 4 distinct perspectives:

  1. Strategy – The comprehensive vision as it pertains to what the supply chain is currently doing with digitalized decision making and analytical tools
  2. Processes – This includes not only the way inputs are fed into and outputs are looked at as they go to and from the tool, but also the governance, segregation of responsibility, and ways to continually mature
  3. People – Relating to the capacity of the team and also the levels of the differing needs of subject matter expertise.
  4. Technology – The technological evaluation should include the platform the digital tool is hosted on, the data infrastructure and connectivity to it, as well as the user interface and dashboards displaying outputs

To truly build a mature and digitally enabled supply chain organization, all 4 areas need to evolve in sync with one another. A gap analysis plots both where each attribute sits today and aligns where each needs to be in the short, medium, and long term in order to enable the maturity development the organization requires.

Key Questions to Address:

  •  Where is there disconnect between the strategy, processes, people, and technology?
  • How mature does the organization want to be versus where it is today?
  • How should areas for improvement be prioritized in order to continue the maturation of the supply chain’s digital capability?
  • Do certain aspects need to be improved in order to unlock investment that has occurred in other areas?
  • Where is the greatest risk to the digital transformation?

A gap assessment doesn’t necessarily solve all the areas of opportunity in digital transformation. However, it does identify where the gaps are so that way a plan can be put in place in order to close those gaps and advance the maturity of the digital capability in a holistic manner.
